The Naming Habits of a 3.5 year old

Right, so I noticed my daughter playing with her toys, and I realized that I'm working on becoming titled something that she associates with villains.

Maybe I should give more explanation before I declare myself the real life villain. So, kids name their toys, it's just a fact of life. Sometimes they name their toys really inappropriate things (like this video from the Island of Misnamed toys, at least none of ours live there), and sometimes pretty innocuous.

For instance:
Bear, as advertised.
Unicorn

Dragon

Right, so far so good, right.

This is Dog:

Dog. No really, Dog.

This is Gug:
This is the beloved Gug.

And then there's the villain toy, Dr. Tam. No really, she named her villain toy Dr. Tam.

Dr. Tam. That's right, the only one with a PhD is the villain...

Right, so here I am furiously working on getting my PhD, and my daughter associates people named doctor with being the bad guy. I'm looking at you Phineas and Ferb.

  1. That was a very cute post. I remember when my daughters used to do this. But alas, my twins are 12 now and they no longer play the name game the same way. They consider themselves more sophisticated and use a Baby Name Book.

I can't recall if they generally associated the Dr. title with something evil but I do remember that at age 3-5 (the age of vaccines) they definately thought their primary care physician was their nemesis!

    1. Our primary care physician has very carefully avoided being the person to deliver immunizations, so my daughter only hates the nurses.

    1. I know. And she constantly has them rescuing each other (I think that might be the influence of Diego Animal rescuer).

  3. Lol! It is a good villan name, but I'm sure she didn't even think of that ;)

    1. True, but I think she was trying to imitate Phineas and Ferb with Perry's nemesis, Dr. Doofenshmirtz. And yeah, in her play she casts Dr. Tam as the bad guy. So yeah, it's the evil toy...

  4. LOL! That's awesome. I love kids creativity, and wow, the psychological implications... ;) I think Dog is my favorite.

    1. Yeah, you know I always thought my back story really had all the earmarks of hero, but lately... well I'm starting to wonder what team I'm on.

  5. Well, what you have to remember is that Tam has a PhD in villainy. So there's that.

    1. I knew it, Tam is following in Dr. Horrible's footsteps. I just hope Captain Hammer doesn't break down the door to the house on his way in.

    2. Hammer, eh? If I ever find a stuffed Thor toy, I'm getting it for her. :P

    3. Yeah, but then we'd be sending her mixed messages: this is a Loki house.

    1. Dog is definitely a favorite. She puts a leash around his neck and takes him for walks around the living room.

  10. Haha. That is too funny! My son wanted to name his good guy Sinister. LOL. I love kids imaginations.

And Dr. Doof is one of my favorite bad guys. ;)

    1. Sinister is great name for a good guy. And according to the evil overlord handbook, one should dress in bright cheery colors to throw off the good guys...

      And yeah, Dr. Doof FTW!

This made my night. Thank you, DrFaeriegodmother/Dr. Tam.

Also, honorable mention to Dr. Doofenschmirtz. Doofenshmirtz?

    1. Yeah, every time I go to spell Dr. D, I have to look it up too. He's a fantastic villain. I sometimes go around the lab and name things like he would. So I don't have analyzers, I have analyzinators, and instead of vacuum pumps I have pumpinators. My lab mates think I"m nuts...

  12. Kids have an unnerving capacity for this. Wait till she starts naming you. I get called tubby, baldatron, old guy and many others. Naming toys in mild in comparison.

    1. Hmmm, I'm going to have to say that baldatron isn't very nice. But if we're talking about nicknames, I've survived a number of fairly embarrassing ones, so I'm well armed there...
