I think I'm rather sheltered when it comes to self-publishing - many of my blog friends have gone that route with some fantastic books, so I see it as being completely normal. But when I talk to real life friends, a lot of them stick to the bestsellers.
A Facebook friend recently asked for book suggestions on her status, but asked for bestsellers only. How are new writers ever going to break through with those attitudes?
By the way, Rena, you have a lovely screen presence :-)
One of the things I love most about indy and small pub is that these writers rarely follow the formulas that some of the big houses promote.
I think the self-publishing persona is getting batter, though those books that people toss out there from,the rough draft state still make indies look bad.
It's our names on the book, so take care no matter what route you choose.
As much as I've said I don't want to go the self-publishing route, it's something I find myself thinking about more, now that I've seen so many success stories. But you're right - throwing a first draft online is not the way to go about it. >_< And I don't know if self-pub will ever be considered on the same level as traditional publishing, no matter how many good books come of it.
Granted, part of why I'm considering self-pub is that one book I hope to write might be too damn weird to ever find an agent, but... *shrug*
